“And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments”(Exodus 34:28)
Ten Commandments = Old Covenant = Mosaic Law
The Old Covenant revolved around the 10 commandments God gave to Moses on Mt Sinai. God gave it through Moses a servant of God written it in a stone! In the old covenant the basis of relationship with God was this written HOLY commandment! The commandments, the conditional covenant were demanding a perfect obedience from the people in order for them to earn the blessings from God!
The two tablets [Exodus 20] – contained the 10 commandments of God!

- 10 Commandments – First stone contained the Holy demands pertaining to God [Set of 4]
The first 4 commandments of this covenant was related to man’s relationship with God , where it demands from man to love the God with all their heart , mind and soul !God Demand
your perfect love!
- “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
- “You shall have no other gods before me.
- “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
- “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
- 10 Commandments- Second stone contained the Holy demands pertaining to Man (Set of 6)
The last 6 commandments of this old covenant was about man’s relationship with the fellow man- namely his neighbor (Fellow Israel) – God demands your love towards your neighbor!
- “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
- “You shall not murder.
- “You shall not commit adultery.
- “You shall not steal.
- “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
- “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
God gives law to direct the behavior of His people, the nation Israel. The Mosaic Law refers to “the statutes and ordinances and laws which the LORD established between Himself and the sons of Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai” (Lev. 26:46). The Mosaic Law:
- Revealed the holy character of God!
“The law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good”(Rom 7:12) “The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous “(Psalm 19:9)
- The Mosaic law was specifically for the nation Israel only!
“These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between Him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses “(Lev 26:46)
- Mosaic law was regarded as a unit of laws (613), but considered as a whole!
“Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. (Gal.5:3). “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it”(James 2:10)
- Existed for nearly 1500 years before being rendered inoperative-It wasn’t eternal!
“In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away”(2Cor 3:7)
Three integrated parts in the Mosaic Law – which is generally referred as LAW!

The law basically refers to the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. It was the expected rule of life for the Israelite (Ex. 20-Deut. 28). None of the surrounding nations of Israel—the Gentiles—were expected to live by the commands of the Mosaic Law, because they were not God’s people and were not in a covenantal relationship with Him (see Eph. 2:12). The Gentile was no more under the Mosaic Law than a Indian is under US law, as laws only speak and have authority to its citizenry. The nation, Israel, alone was the recipient of the Law (Exod. 20:2). The Mosaic Law was never a means of justification before God, as that has always been by faith alone in God and His promises (Gal. 2:16). Over time, the Mosaic Law became perverted into a system of works whereby men sought to earn their salvation before God (Luke 18:9-14). Even in the time of Christ men asked, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” Jesus responded, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent” (John 6:28-29).
The Nature of the Law!
The Law is holy, perfect, good & spiritual!
The Law cannot make anyone Holy, Righteous and spiritual!
The Law never justifies anyone!
The Law was a system of “Self Righteousness”
The Law demands Righteousness from Man! – A work!
The Law is not grace – not Unmerited, it’s an earn by effort!
The Law is served as the instructor until Christ appeared!
The Law cannot save anyone but condemns all! Etc!
“For by the law is the knowledge of sin (Rom 3:20).”
The Mosaic Law served as a way of life for the Israelites, but no Jew could keep it perfectly. This proved him a sinner in line for God’s judgment. No man can be justified or have a right standing before God by his works. Man must receive Jesus Christ who alone can give him a righteousness that will make him acceptable to God. The law was intended to bring the knowledge of Sin and the need of a Savior! Jesus Christ is the end of the law! He born under law as a Jew, He kept or obeys the law perfectly; He redeemed all from the curse of the law by nailing it on the cross!

Yes! The good part is , the Law or the Old covenant is obsolete and doesn’t have power!
Christ nailed it In the Cross for you and me and declared! IT Is Finished!
I just wrote this for you all to know ,the old covenant and its nature. You may refer my other articles for to know the purpose and the problem of the law and the current status of the old covenant etc!
You Christians, Know and Believe this – You are not under Law – But under Grace! Because anyone is in Christ,he is a New Creation!
“We are not under Law but under grace”[Rom 6:15]
“We Love God , because He first loved us”[1John 4:19]
“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ”[John 1:17]

” I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes by the law, then Christ died in vain” [Galatians 2:21]
